Suvarnabhumi Airport needs expansion
September 24th, 2006Kasikorn Research Centre (KRC) recommended that agencies involved with Suvarnabhumi Airport consider expanding the hub to keep pace with a rapidly growing aviation industry.
According to International Air Transport Association (IATA), in the next five years, commercial passenger service will grow by 5.6 percent per year, while cargo business will grow by 6.3 percent per year.
“Suvarnabhumi Airport covers 8,000 acres, making it possible to host a maximum of four runways, 112 flights per hour, 100 million passengers per year and six million tonnes of cargo per year,” KRC analysts wrote in their report. It will be necessary to expand Suvarnabhumi. Agencies have to start working on it right now, otherwise we may not be able to serve future growth and may not be able to become the regional hub,” KRC analysts reported.
Thai Airways premium passengers to increase after Suvarnabhumi opens
September 24th, 2006Thai Airways International Plc. (THAI) expects that after Suvarnabhumi Airport opens on September 28 the number of its premium passengers will increase dramatically.
THAI applies the title ‘premium passenger’ to those in its royal and first class seating, and have created a number of amenities for these travellers at the new airport.
The first check-in island, located on the western end of the passenger terminal, will be dedicated to THAI’s premium travellers. While waiting to receive their boarding passes, premium passengers will be able to wait in a specially designated antechamber.
Energy-cutting measures at Suvarnabhumi help airlines save
September 23rd, 2006Bangkok Airways senior officials said Suvarnabhumi Airport will help airlines dramatically reduce fuel costs due to less air traffic congestion compared to Bangkok International Airport (Don Muang).
“At Suvarnabhumi, we can save about 400,000 to 500,000 baht a day on fuel expenses,” said Puthipong Prasartthong-osot, vice president of operations at Bangkok Airways.
Suvarnabhumi’s two parallel runways can accommodate simultaneous departures and arrivals, a convenience for airlines.
“A captain will not have to wait as long in the air before receiving final landing permission,” said Puthipong, which means planes will burn less fuel.
