Opening Suvarnabhumi Airports is not easy

October 4th, 2006

Over the past week we have seen the activation of Suvarnabhumi Airport, and heard media commentary on the glitches, passenger frustrations and cargo delays due to teething problems. Relative to other international airport openings, however, Suvarnabhumi has done extremely well.

In typical Thai style, (and without the usual Western signs of panic or outward frustration), newly trained airport staff in the passenger terminals and cargo sheds have quietly and efficiently cleared passengers from hundreds of arriving aircraft and have already shipped thousands of tonnes of air cargo with a smile (even though some short-term backlogs have occurred).

Battle of the Airtropolises takes off

October 3rd, 2006

Suvarnabhumi AirportCNA Singapore News Analysis: - With the opening of Bangkok’s new Suvarnabhumi Airport on Sept 28, the race to develop airport cities takes a critical step forward.

In no other part of the world is the competition more intense than this region. While Singapore Changi Airport frequently tops the list for efficiency, its closest rivals, which include Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) at Chep Lap Kok besides Suvarnabhumi, boast room for expansion that would be hard to come by for Changi in the new strategy.

Expected more foreign arrivals at Suvarnabhumi Airport

October 2nd, 2006

Airports of Thailand’s President Chotisak Asapaviriya on Sunday voiced confidence more foreign tourists would visit Thailand at end of this year since 10 more airliners expressed intention to land at the Suvarnabhumi Airport.

He said the official inauguration of the airport on September 28 is a proper decision because the Bangkok International Airport at Don Muang could not accommodate the increased number of passengers.

Also, should the Suvarnabhumi Airport open in November or December, the transfer would be more difficult since it is a high season period.
