Budget airlines move back to Don Muang rejected
October 19th, 2006Thailand’s aviation authorities on Wednesday rejected a plea by budget air carriers to return their operations to the former Bangkok International Airport at Don Muang, saying that the move would double official expenses to keep two airports in operation.
Department of Aviation director-general Chaisak Angkasuwan said he disagreed with the call from economy airlines to move their operations back to the old airport from the recently opened Suvarnabhumi Airport.
The reduced-fare airlines have reportedly been unhappy with the higher cost they are encountering at the new airport, in particularly the fees for parking aircraft.

As the closure of the 92-year-old Don Muang airport last month has dramatically changed the business landscape for hotels situated in its neighbourhood as airport-related business and guests have dried up.
The move of all air services to Suvarnabhumi Airport on Sept 28 has prompted operators in the Don Muang area, such as the Amari Don Muang Hotel (Former: Amari Airport Hotel) , Miracle Grand Convention Hotel Bangkok and Rama Gardens Hotel Bangkok to focus on a new target market.
Governmenrt plans Suvarnabhumi Airport expansion
October 16th, 2006Less than a month into its commercial opening, the Aviation Department is already planning expansion of Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi Airport to accommodate rapid growth in passenger traffic.
Department of Aviation director-general Chaisak Angkasuwan said he will propose to the Transport Ministry and Airports of Thailand Plc.(AOT), which manages the airport, to speed up the feasibility study to build a new passenger terminal exclusively for low-cost carriers as well as the third runway to accommodate growth in air traffic.
