Deputy Prime Minister opposes Suvarnabhumi province plan

November 1st, 2006

Deputy Prime Minister Pridiyathorn Devakula today said he opposes the plan to set up a province surrounding Suvarnabhumi Airport, saying that the area should be left alone as a flood-prevention area for Bangkok.

“There are a lot of retention ponds in the area and water experts said they serve as waterways, allowing floods to flow to the sea, if there are buildings, they will obstruct water from flowing out, and cause the inner city to flood.” said Pridiyathorn.

The Deputy Prime Minister said the water issue was a question of city planning, not a matter of using the waterway for transportation.
