Acting national police chief named as a new Airports of Thailand’s board member

June 4th, 2007

Airports of Thailand will today name acting national police chief Seripisuth Temiyavej as a new board member to help crack down on stubborn mafia-type gangs at Suvarnabhumi airport.

At Friday 1 June, 2007’s meeting of the Airports of Thailand board, chaired by Saprang Kalayanamitr, the issue of adding a new member would be discussed and Pol Gen Seripisuth, who is known for his tough action against criminals, would be the first choice, a Transport Ministry source said.

Gen Saprang, also assistant army chief, vowed to wipe out mafia gangs at the new Bangkok airport when he became chairman late last year, but the problem continues to mar the airport’s image.

In flight liquids to be strictly enforced on June 1, 2007

May 27th, 2007

Starting June 1, 2007, The Transport Ministry’s Aviation Department will enforce its rule requiring air passengers to display liquids, gels and sprays in transparent containers before boarding flights, Director-General Chaisak Angkasuwan said Saturday.

Mr. Chaisak said he had met representatives of Airports of Thailand (AOT), airlines and King Power, contracted for duty free and other business at Suvarnabhumi airport, regarding the measure, which will be enforced both on domestic and international routes beginning June 1.

Enforcement will follow International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) procedures already used by many airlines worldwide after Britain last year disclosed that terrorists planned to destroy planes and passengers with liquid bombs carried aboard aircraft.

Chairing a meeting on the drainage system around Suvarnabhumi Airport, Royal Irrigation Department director-general Samart Chokkanapitak said the meeting resulted from the Prime Minister’s assignment.

Royal Irrigation Department director confidents that there will not be high water problems at or around the new international airport, which is quite important to the economy, and that waterflow and drainage conditions will be closely monitored.
