Suvarnabhumi Airport State Agencies affirmed system readiness

State agencies concerned in preparation for the opening of the Suvarnabhumi Airport for commercial services have affirmed that various operating and supporting systems under their supervision have already been put in place.

The Suvarnabhumi Airport Development Committee, chaired by Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, met on Friday with representatives of agencies concerned, including the Transport Ministry, Airports of Thailand Public Co., Ltd., Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (THAI) and the Department of Aviation, to conclude the readiness of the opening of the airport for commercial services–initially for local flights of THAI on September 15.

Suvarnabhumi Bangkok ThailandTransport Minister Pongsak Raktapongpaisal on Thursday affirmed that Bangkok’s new Suvarnabhumi Airport is ready to open for commercial services on September 28, but might have some problems on equipment transfer in an initial period.

Mr. Pongsak said the airport had already been in place for services, while the Don Muang International Airport is so crowded now.

He conceded that there might be some difficulties in the equipment transfer or the opening in an initial period. But it is considered usual for the transfer of offices to a new location.

Heightened security concerns due to a foiled terror plot in the United Kingdom earlier this week have caused Thai aviation officials to halt tours of the not yet opened Suvarnabhumi International Airport terminals as of August 15, 2006.

Public tours of the new Suvarnabhumi Airport terminals, which have drawn a large crowds daily, will be cancelled from next Tuesday due to tightened security measures following the arrests of suspected terrorists who intended to blow up as many as a dozen aircraft departing UK airports for the United States.
