Private sector confident Suvarnabhumi’s cargo hub potential

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

Leading executives are certain that Suvarnabhumi Airport will become Asia’s regional cargo hub, and as a result promote trade in the region.

Vikrom Kromadit, CEO of industrial estate developer Amata Corporation Plc, said the new airport will be a distribution gateway to Thailand and the rest of Asia, with the ability to support commerce brought about by Free Trade Agreements (FTA) between Thailand and major partners, like China and Australia.

Suvarnabhumi Airport’s ability to handle greater cargo capacity, he said, is a crucial factor in realising Thailand’s aspiration in becoming the region’s cargo hub.

Monday, September 11th, 2006

The opening of the Suvarnabhumi Airport for commercial services late this month will boost a continued investment, particularly in the eastern region where the airport is located, according to the Stock Exchange of Thailand.

SET President Patareeya Benjapolchai said on Sunday the official inauguration of the airport on September 28 would lead to further investment in local industrial estates, trade and other businesses, which could contribute to the country’s economic growth in the long run.

She said she supported state investment in expanding areas of the new airport to accommodate an expected increase in trade and investment in the future since Don Muang International Airport is currently crowded.
