Land near new Bangkok Airport can be used for logistics, expert says
Friday, November 3rd, 2006A special agency should be set up and a new planning regime imposed to map out proper use of land near airports, especially the new Suvarnabhumi Airport, an aviation expert has suggested.
Better management would help prevent the new airport from becoming surrounded by residential areas and other businesses or activities that are not related to aviation, said Suwat Wanisubut, director of the Office of the Suvarnabhumi Airport Development Committee.
He noted that no controls existed around the old Don Muang airport and the result was a hodge-podge of land uses, not all of them compatible.
Suvarnabhumi Aerotropolis plan would have pros and cons
Friday, November 3rd, 2006Plans to create a so-called aerotropolis around Suvarnabhumi Airport, now put on hold by the interim government, would help the country’s economy but hurt the environment, developers say. Problems would arise with water drainage and general living conditions in the area surrounding the airport city, they said.
The aerotropolis plan had “pros and cons. Everything has a trade-off,” said Teerachon Manomaiphibul, deputy managing director of the listed developer Property Perfect Plc..
“If we’re ready in terms of finance, the plan will accelerate development in the area. And development will not limit only the area linking the airport and Bangkok or Pattaya, but it will expand in all directions. However, the development needs a huge investment and the vast area would block the water flow.” he said.
Deputy Prime Minister opposes Suvarnabhumi province plan
Wednesday, November 1st, 2006Deputy Prime Minister Pridiyathorn Devakula today said he opposes the plan to set up a province surrounding Suvarnabhumi Airport, saying that the area should be left alone as a flood-prevention area for Bangkok.
“There are a lot of retention ponds in the area and water experts said they serve as waterways, allowing floods to flow to the sea, if there are buildings, they will obstruct water from flowing out, and cause the inner city to flood.” said Pridiyathorn.
The Deputy Prime Minister said the water issue was a question of city planning, not a matter of using the waterway for transportation.
