Airports of Thailand to cancel Suvarnabhumi Airport hotel contract
Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007The management contract for the airport hotel at Suvarnabhumi will be cancelled because the contractor was unqualified to win it in the first place, an informed source said. The board of the Suvarnabhumi airport hotel, headed by Airports of Thailand chairman General Saprang Kalayanamitr, decided yesterday to void the contract of Universal Hospitality Joint Venture, which runs the Novotel Suvarnabhumi Airport hotel.
Airports of Thailand board found that the bidding terms for the management rights of the hotel prohibited a joint venture from vying for the contract because a joint venture is not a juristic entity under the Civil Code and this could pose legal problems.
Burmese carrier launches flights to new Bangkok Airport
Friday, May 18th, 2007Air Bagan, the first privately owned carrier in military-ruled Burma, has started daily flights between Rangoon and Bangkok, its first international route heralding an ambitious overseas expansion. The airline, which was launched in November 2004 as a domestic carrier, is also preparing to start daily flights from its Rangoon hub to Singapore in September, and a Rangoon-Mandalay-Kunming route in August, twice weekly.
They will be followed by the launch in October of regular flights to Siem Reap in Cambodia as well as chartered flights to Incheon and Osaka, according to chairman Yay Za, a Burmese tycoon who built his diverse business empire from timber exports.
Royal celebrations lift visitor arrivals to Thailand in 2006
Wednesday, May 16th, 2007The positive global publicity generated by the 60th anniversary of His Majesty the King’s Accession to the throne was a major contributing factor for Thailand’s tourism industry recording 13.82 million visitor arrivals in 2006, up by more than 20% over 2005.
The high rate of increase in 2006 was a reflection of the country’s tourism industry returning to normal following the severe impact of the tsunami in 2005, and 2007 is likely to see arrivals settling down to a more modest single-digit growth level of 7% to just under 15 million.
