Thai Airways loses customers after moving back to Don Muang airport

Thai Airways International‘s decision to move a large part of its domestic services to the old Don Muang airport has resulted in a loss of tens of thousands of passengers who require connecting flights.

The flag carrier could have lost as many as 70,000 foreign travellers, who were transferring from international flights to domestic destinations or travelling from domestic routes to overseas, since Thai Airways started operating through the 93-year-old airport on March 25, 2007.

These travellers have turned to other carriers due to the hassle and long wait in connecting with international flights – all of which run through Suvarnabhumi Airport, a time-consuming 27 km away.

Air traffic up during Songkran Celebration

It is expected that the largest number of travellers will be going by air for the Sonkran celebration (Thai New Year & Water Festival), especially Thursday evening, April 12, 2007. Many airlines have increased the number of flights to accommodate more passengers throughout the Songkran period.

At Suvarnabhumi Airport, the number of flights has increased by 424 per day. Of this, 369 are international flights with 183 outbound and 186 inbound, and 55 are domestic flights with 28 outbound and 27 inbound.

It is expected that the number of passengers at Suvarnabhumi would rise by over 65,000. It brings up the number of passengers at two airports by 72,000 altogether in the Songkran festival.

Thai Airways to add 20 flights for Songkran Water Festival

Thai Airways International (THAI) has announced it will add 20 special flights on domestic routes to Chiang Mai and Phuket from Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang airports, numbering 5,200 seats, in order to serve passengers traveling during the Songkran holiday.

Thai Airways International president Apinan Sumanaseni said Thai Airways would add 11 domestic flights between Suvarnabhumi and both Chiang Mai and Phuket, totaling 2,860 seats.

From Don Muang, nine additional flights with 2,340 seats will be routed to and from Chiang Mai.
