Bangkok Airways says fare hike to Koh Samui was unavoidable

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

Bangkok Airways has defended the airline’s recent fare hike to Koh Samui which local tour operators and tourism organisations have slammed as counter-productive to the resort island’s tourism growth. In a Nov 3 press release picked up in Koh Samui, the airline explained that the Oct 29 hike, its first in four years, was unavoidable.

Bangkok Airways has incurred higher labour and fuel costs every year for the last five years. The relocation this year of its operations from Don Muang to Suvarnabhumi airport also added to expenses, it said.

Koh Samui tour operators protest sharp rise in airfares by Bangkok Airways

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

Claiming over US$5 million in losses in just one month, tour operators in Thailand’s popular southern resort of Koh Samui (Samui Island) are urging Transport Minister Admiral Thira Haocharoen to find ways to reduce airfares raised by Bangkok Airways recently.

Threatening that Koh Samui residents and tour businesses will take drastic action, closing the island’s airport, if their request is ignored, Seni Puvasettavorn, president of the Koh Samui Tourism Promotion Association, said tour operators and islanders have been hit hard by Bangkok Airways recent increase of its airfare by 20 per cent.
