Customs Department officials are satisfied with the overall performance of Suvarnabhumi Airport on its first two days of full operations, despite minor issues in cargo handling.

“There were no problems with passenger service, but some import-export entrepreneurs were inconvenienced when denied access to certain areas under the authority of multiple agencies. The overlap was caused by a lack of communication,” said Sathit Limpongpan, the director-general of the department.

“It was not serious, though. The department will hold a talk among the agencies involved as soon as possible and everything will be completely resolved.”

The department is offering an alternative to help cut time at customs. Any passenger who has goods to declare can send the necessary information to the airport before their arrival in Bangkok. While the passengers are on their way, officials can calculate the necessary tax.

“This will help accelerate customs,” said Sathit.

Over 100 companies have already informed the department of their readiness to use the paperless system, according to Surachart Chanthavatcharakorn, director of Suvarnabhumi’s Customs Service Section.

As for cargo procedures at the airport, the new E-Customs equipment, which is aimed at reducing time and paperwork, will not be fully installed until January 2007.

“We postponed the E-Customs plan for another three months so as to give businesses time to adjust to the paperless system,” said Sathit. (TNA)
