Bangkok and Chiang Mai named top 10 best cities in the world

Friday, October 6th, 2006

The city of Bangkok has been placed third in the World’s Best Awards 2006, ranked as the world’s third favourite city for tourism–after Italy’s Florence and Rome, respectively.

It’s a repeat honour for Bangkok. The City of Angels copped the American award as Asia’s best every year for the four previous years.

Bangkok governor Apirak Kosayodhin received the “Asia’s Best City 2006” award from America’s Travel + Leisure magazine on Friday.

More than that, Thailand’s northern city of Chiang Mai was voted the world’s fifth favourite tourist city and second in Asia. The magazine conducted surveys of tourists and its readers through its website and questionnaires.

Singapore airport director said Suvarnabhumi can compete against Changi

Friday, October 6th, 2006

Suvarnabhumi Airport could become a formidable competitor to the award winning Changi Airport, according to the Singapore airport’s managing director Foo Sek Min.

He said Bangkok’s new international airport was a “100 per cent improvement” on Don Muang, despite the many hitches since it opened on September 28.

Foo warned, however, that Suvarnabhumi should be aware of its costs spiralling, put up better signs and improve its baggage-handling system.

He said Changi – regarded as the world’s best airport – was confident in its strategy of having three main terminals plus one low-cost terminal, instead of having one mega-terminal like Suvarnabhumi.

Free-Trade Zone suggested for Suvarnabhumi Airport

Friday, October 6th, 2006

The Director of the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP), Mr. Maitri Srinarawat, says establishment of free-trade zones will attract more foreign investors to Thailand as well as increase Thai exports.

He commented that setting up the free-trade zone in Suvarnabhumi Airport will be an important part that helps reduce the cost of importing raw materials for goods manufacturing in Thailand. He also believed that goods produced for export will rise to 5 million tonnes per annum within 5 years, by which time Thailand will be able to beat up other trade rivals such as Singapore and Hong Kong.
