Asian airport investment vital for regional growth: analysts

A glitzy new airport that opened recently in Thailand reflects Asia’s need for investment to cope with a fast-growing aviation sector, industry analysts say.

While the opening of Suvarnabhumi international airport has intensified rivalry within Asia for market share, analysts say an expanding aviation sector means there is enough business for everybody.

“We are not worried about over-investing,” said Paul Behnke, director of economics at Airports Council International (ACI). There is under-investment in some of the key countries and frankly, airport capacity is in short supply.”




Thai Airways sets up Call Center for passengers baggage claim

Thai Airways International has improved the efficiency of the baggage claim service at Suvarnabhumi Airport by opening a call center to help passengers get their baggage 24 hours a day.

Passengers who don’t receive baggage are requested to call 0-2130-0057-8 , 0-2130-0060 anytime.

And due to a great number of passengers using the Suvarnabhumi international airport since its official opening on September 28th, 2006, the national flag carrier urges all passengers to check in before time.

Passengers of international flights are requested to check in 3 hours before boarding time while domestic passengers should check in one hour before departure.




Suvarnabhumi Airport resolved delayed luggage’s problems.

Mr. Somchai Swasdipol, Director of Suvarnabhumi Airport, spoke on the problem of delayed luggage involving more than 6,000 pieces of luggage, and revealed that all problems were settled within that day.

He said the baggage delay was caused by an obstructed conveyor belt in the luggage claiming system. This resulted in the delay of about 6,722 pieces of luggage, 760 of which belonged to Thai Airways.

Initially, the airport used a back up plan called “For Backpack”. This method involve marking the luggage’s final destination since the luggage was weighted at check-in. As for now, the plan had resolved all delayed problems.
