Bangkok Airways starts at Suvarnabhumi Airport on September 21, 2006

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

Bangkok Airways will begin transferring some flights from Bangkok International Airport (Don Muang) to Suvarnabhumi on September 21 to 27.

The first flights to switch to the new airport include Sukhothai, Chiang Mai and Samui on the domestic side, and China’s Xixuangbanna and Shenzhen on the international.

Though it does not fully open until September 28, Thai Airways International and low cost airline Jetstar are already operating flights from Suvarnabhumi Airport as part of a soft opening for the new hub. Bangkok Airways will join them on Thursday.

No problem with holes in Suvarnabhumi Airport’s roof

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

Three holes in Suvarnabhumi Airport’s roof will not delay the September 28 opening, said airport General Manager Somchai Sawasdeepon.

“We are working hard to fix the holes and it is not a big problem. The problem can be solved by filling the leaks with silicone. So far, leaks in concourses A and B have been sealed. The remaining leaks will be sealed before September 25,” said Somchai.

The holes were caused during heavy rainfall Sunday night. A number of leaks in the main passenger terminal and all concourses have also been discovered due to poorly sealed mirrors.

Energy consumption to jump after Suvarnabhumi Airport opens

Monday, September 18th, 2006

Oil companies expect demand for jet fuel to increase after Bangkok’s new international airport opens on September 28.

Demand forecasts are based on expectations that the number of flights going through Bangkok will increase. Suvarnabhumi Airport has higher plane, passenger and cargo capacity than current facilities at Bangkok International Airport (Don Muang), which has been Thailand’s primary aviation hub since the 1920s.

“The opening of Suvarnabhumi Airport will help the oil industry, because consumption will increase by 10 to 15 percent,” said Manoon Siriwan, Bangchak Petroleum Plc. deputy managing director.
