Air traffic up during Songkran Celebration
Friday, April 13th, 2007It is expected that the largest number of travellers will be going by air for the Sonkran celebration (Thai New Year & Water Festival), especially Thursday evening, April 12, 2007. Many airlines have increased the number of flights to accommodate more passengers throughout the Songkran period.
At Suvarnabhumi Airport, the number of flights has increased by 424 per day. Of this, 369 are international flights with 183 outbound and 186 inbound, and 55 are domestic flights with 28 outbound and 27 inbound.
It is expected that the number of passengers at Suvarnabhumi would rise by over 65,000. It brings up the number of passengers at two airports by 72,000 altogether in the Songkran festival.
Bangkok’s former Don Muang International Airport officially reopened for domestic flights
Wednesday, March 28th, 2007Bangkok’s former Don Muang International Airport, which was closed to commercial flights nearly six months ago following the opening of Suvarnabhumi Airport, officially reopened Sunday, 25 March 2007, for domestic flights.
Senior Transport Ministry officials, including Permanent Secretary for Transport Chaisawat Kittipornpaibul were on hand to welcome passengers boarding four Thai Airways International (THAI) and Nok Air flights.
They also welcomed the first group of passengers travelling by Nok Air from the northeastern province of Udon Thani to land at Don Muang at around 8.30 am.
Airports of Thailand to study Don Muang as a 2nd Bangkok international airport
Friday, March 23rd, 2007Airports of Thailand (AOT) has been assigned to study the feasibility of turning Don Muang Airport into a second international airport for Bangkok, though the first attempt was foiled after strong protests from international airlines.
According to Kulya Pakakrong, acting president of AOT, which is preparing Don Muang Airport ahead of its reopening this Sunday, the Transport Ministry has ordered the company to carry out the study. The ministry wants the company to operate two international airports in Bangkok.
