Re-opened Don Muang may operate at loss in the beginning

Sunday, February 25th, 2007

Bangkok’s former international airport at Don Muang, scheduled to start operating direct domestic flights on March 25, may operate at a loss in the early stage of its reopening, Deputy Transport Minister Sansern Wongcha-um said.

Initially, only three airlines will operate direct domestic flights from Don Muang , which comprise 17 per cent of the total domestic flights scheduled from the capital. They are now preparing to move back to the airport and to resume providing services there on March 25 as approved earlier by the cabinet, Mr. Sansern confirmed.

The three airlines are Thai Airways, Nok Air and Orient Thai.

Thai Airways to spend Bt10 million to move domestic operations to Don Muang

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

Thai Airways International says it will spend Bt10 million in moving its domestic operations from Suvarnabhumi Airport back to Don Muang.

Chokchai Panyawong, executive vice president, said Friday that the airline was coordinating the return to Don Muang with Airports of Thailand and the traffic police.

About 20 per cent of its ground-service equipment – including ramps, stair vehicles and power units – will need to be trucked over.

The company hopes to finish the transfer by March 20 and start service on March 25,” he said.

Cabinet approves re-opening of Don Muang Airport

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

The cabinet on Tuesday approved the reopening of Bangkok’s 92-year-old Don Muang Airport on March 25 to handle domestic flights while the capital’s new but problem-plagued Suvarnabhumi Airport will handle mainly international travel.

Government spokesman Yongyuth Maiyalarp said the cabinet had decided to reopen Don Muang to handle only domestic flights and it would be up to the airlines themselves to decide which airport they will use.

So far, Thai Airways International (THAI) has agreed to operate its domestic routes from Don Muang as has its affiliate Nok Air and two other privately owned Thai airlines, One-Two-Go and PB Air, Mr Yongyuth said.
