Board of Thailand Airports has resigned

Tuesday, October 24th, 2006

The board of directors of Airports of Thailand has resigned, less than one month after it opened Bangkok’s new Suvarnabhumi international airport, the company said in a statement yesterday.

AOT said in a statement that all of its 14 board members had resigned effective October 18, citing the current changes in the country’s top leadership.

“It is good manners for the board to resign after these political changes, to pave way for the new leaders to appoint a new set of people to work with,” said Chaisak Angkasuwan, the head of the government’s aviation department who is also an AOT board member. A new board will be appointed within one month, he added.

Less than a month into its commercial opening, the Aviation Department is already planning expansion of Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi Airport to accommodate rapid growth in passenger traffic.

Department of Aviation director-general Chaisak Angkasuwan said he will propose to the Transport Ministry and Airports of Thailand Plc.(AOT), which manages the airport, to speed up the feasibility study to build a new passenger terminal exclusively for low-cost carriers as well as the third runway to accommodate growth in air traffic.

Surging traffic puts former Bangkok Airport ahead of Hong Kong and Changi

Friday, October 13th, 2006

The number of travellers passing through Bangkok rose to 31.46 million from January to September, a 10.76% increase from the same period in 2005, underscoring the capital’s position as a major air hub of Asia.

Air traffic through Bangkok grew robustly in the first nine months of the year as tourism rebounded from the aftermath of the December 2004 tsunami and budget carriers continued to proliferate.

The increased traffic has helped Bangkok top rivals Hong Kong and Singapore in the world rankings for the busiest airport, according to the latest statistics from Airports Council International (ACI), a Geneva-based coalition of nearly 1,100 airports. Bangkok International Airport (Don Muang) was the world’s 12th busiest airport through the first five months of the year, up from 18th last year.
