CTX baggage scanners at Suvarnabhumi fully functional this week

Five malfunctioning CTX baggage scanners at Suvarnabhumi Airport will be up and running again this week after experiencing some technical glitches last week, according to the airport director.

There has been no report that passenger baggage was delayed, misplaced or left behind at the new Bangkok airport after the scanners broke down Wednesday night. Over 100 military personnel were called in to help carry baggage.

Suvarnabhumi airport director Serirat Prasutanond said Saturday that key spare parts of the machines will be delivered to Thailand next Tuesday, June 26, 2007. At least five scanners, now temporarily out of order, will be fixed to function normally by the end of next week.

International visitor arrivals increase at Suvarnabhumi Airport

International visitor arrivals at Suvarnabhumi Airport in the four months of the year totalled 3,413,197, an increase of 2.61 per cent year on year.

This includes only those who arrived in Bangkok as a first point of entry and not those who flew directly to other points in Thailand or who entered the country at border checkpoints. About 70 per cent of visitors usually make Bangkok their first point of entry.

Arrivals at Suvarnabhumi Airport from major markets in the period included

East Asia = 1,525,989,

Europe = 1,114,770

The Americas = 267,965

Oceania = 161,097

Airport Special Campaign: Thai Culture & Lucky Passenger

Airports of Thailand will launch a four-month program of Thai culture and tradition at the 125-billion-baht Bangkok international airport in an effort to encourage passengers to part with more cash.

The seven-million-baht marketing scheme would make air travellers feel very impressed with Thai culture and tradition, said Narongchai Tanachangsaeng, the airport’s deputy general manager.

Special activities under the theme “Suvarnabhumi: The Beauty Given and the Impression Received” would help increase the state-run company’s revenue. The authority projects 45-46 million passengers will enter Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang airports in 2007.
